Courthouse move makes us all safer

Visitors to the Muskogee County Courthouse will be diverted to the main entrance starting in October.

This comes just more than one year from the closing of the main entrance and diversion of visitors to the parking garage entrance.

We applaud the move back to the main entrance — the one facing the west — and not just because it is more aesthetically pleasing.

Visitors and employees were sent to the parking garage entrance in August 2012 so they could be screened by a metal detector. The Sheriff’s Office had plans to add an X-ray machine.

Muskogee County  Undersheriff Terry Freeman said the U.S. marshals at Muskogee’s federal courthouse recently told him their X-ray machine would become available. Freeman said he was able to get the machine for a processing fee of $500.

A comparable machine would cost about $30,000, he said.

Visitors and their bags now will be screened for metals and possible explosives.

The courthouse will be a safer place and the Sheriff’s Office did a good job by spending a minimal amount of money to acquire the X-ray machine.
