Building’s future looks bright

Downtown Muskogee’s future looks brighter because it appears the vacant Charles Haskell Building will be sold to developers.

The Haskell Building has been dormant since Connors State College moved its satellite campus to Northeastern State University-Muskogee’s campus on Shawnee Bypass.

It is always troublesome to hear when a tenant moves out of one of our downtown buildings without a new tenant waiting to move in.

Several buildings downtown have remained unoccupied for years and even decades.

The old Hunt’s Building is just now being torn down years after its last tenant.

That is something none of us want to see.

That’s why we are  so optimistic to hear a company submitted a bid for the Haskell Building.

Mark Larson, the registered agent of East End Village, submitted the sole bid for the building.

East End Village is planning to develop residential and commercial space in downtown Tulsa.

We can only hope the company has the same plans for the Haskell Building.

The company submitted the minimum bid of $346,500 — or 90 percent of the appraised value, which is the minimum amount that could be accepted pursuant to state law.

It will be some time before we know any plans for the building.

But, for now, the Haskell Building’s future looks much brighter today than it did when Connors State moved out.
