THE PEOPLE SPEAK - Our vets deserve better treatment

They should be dancing in the streets at the White House. Every scandal is a blessing in disguise. In the health care delivery fiasco in the Department of Veterans Affairs, the blessing is it gives reformers a chance to change the system that makes vets wait weeks or maybe, months, to see a doctor.

The VA is underwater because of a tidal wave of Iraq and Afghan war veterans needing psychological treatment for post- traumatic stress and hostility toward the country that sent them to war.

Added to that are Vietnam war veterans who are aging out of their career paths and are turning to the VA for medical care. The best answer to the scandal is for veterans to be issued a health care credit card to be treated by the VA or the private hospital and private physician of their choice. Here’s why we need such a radical change: Republicans want the VA to be chintzy on salaries needed for the VA to attract the best doctors, nurses, and mental health professionals. Every veteran should be entitled to the best care in the country after risking life and limb defending us. The VA will never have enough personnel to meet its goal of seeing every patient in 14 days.
