THE PEOPLE SPEAK - GOP has left us out in the cold

For about the last six years the Republicans have been hard at work damaging America, and the American people. When the Democrats tried to remove the tax incentive for the big corporations, the Republican Senate filibustered it until it died. Had it passed, it would have helped the economy, lowered unemployment, and brought back good paying jobs, while helping the American people.

Since then the Republicans have denied millions of Americans an extension of long-term unemployment benefits, which has torn families apart, increased child and spousal abuse, increased homelessness and caused more depression.

Our Social Security system is one of the most popular programs ever built, and is there for everyone for retirement, even for the children, or spouse in the case of death, but the Republicans want to erase it.

The game is rigged and it’s rigged because the rich and their lobbyists have rigged the rules in their favor. The rigged tax code is starving the federal and state governments of the revenue it needs to invest in infrastructure, making America increasingly like a Third World country, and resources are on the decline.

For the last 30 years, the Republican Party has given tax cuts for the rich, with spending cuts for education, along with many other things, while adding to the national debt. All the while leaving the American people out in the cold.

In 1960, the top 1 percent earned less than 8 percent of the nation’s net worth. Now they earn 22 percent and it’s still rising. Those that have a net worth of $20 million or more now own one-fourth of everything that can be owned in America. From 1997 to 2008, the wealth of the bottom 90 percent has dropped for 35 percent to nearly 25 percent. The bottom 50 percent now has a net worth of near zero.
