Bear ministry a unique way to help kids

— Chandler Road Church of Christ’s “Bear Ministry” has been helping out children for more than two decades.

The group meets once a month to make bears for children to hold onto when they feel scared in the hospital.

Each bear given out at local hospitals has been sewn, painted, stuffed, and labeled, “Made With Love.”

These women deserve praise for the work they do to comfort children during what usually is a scary and unknown experience.

Children “(hang) onto them for dear life,” said Rhonda Frasier, who has been involved in the ministry for more than seven years. “It’s something they cling to; it’s a security blanket.”

Each bear takes around one hour to complete. The group delivered 167 bears to EASTAR Health System and Three Rivers Health Center recently.

Over the two decades of the “Bear Ministry,” women have come and gone. The ministry faces a new challenge as its numbers dwindle and as fewer people know how to sew.

The ministry offers the perfect opportunity to volunteer to help children and to maybe learn a new hobby in the process.

The ministry has been going for so long and is such a unique one, it doesn’t deserve to just keep dwindling.

So help out and keep it going, if nothing else, for the children’s’ sake.
