First off, this isn’t an endorsement of James Lankford. I can’t stand Lankford any more than I can T. W. Shannon. Crazy has been described as doing the same thing repeatedly hoping for a different outcome. And Lankford has voted to repeal Obamacare close to 50 times, and brags about it. But in Oklahoma, right-wing insanity gets you re-elected.
No, the most dangerous looney in this bin is Shannon. If sent to Washington, he’ll quickly align himself with the Ted Cruz-nutjob wing of the GOP. That was magnificently evidenced when three of the biggest haters this country’s ever seen — Cruz, Palin, and Mike Lee — came to Tulsa to stump for him.
In his ads, this “Patriot” boasts about blocking expanding Medicare in Oklahoma. To him, denying health coverage to 200,000 Oklahomans is a mark of excellence. Because of him, Insure OK is endangered.
An ideological fascist through and through, he last year single handily shot down a bill banning texting and driving. In his office, OHP and AAA officials were picking their jaws up off the floor as Shannon told them reckless behavior was all about individual freedom, public safety be damned.
It’s obscene how deep in the pockets of Big Oil and the private prison industry he is. Thanks to him, Oklahoma taxpayers are paying for empty beds at private prisons whether a prisoner’s there or not. The prison industry’s footed the bill for Shannon’s Speaker’s Ball the past two years. I’m sure they expected nothing in return.
His political ambitions are such that he’s been absent from doing the job he was elected to do. Even Tom Coburn said he and his supporters are liars.
The choice should be a no-brainer for moderate Republicans, if there’s any left in this state. But there are many who remain registered Democrats and vote in that primary for the weakest, most defeatable candidate on that ballot. How else do you think we got Jeri Askins as the Democratic nominee for governor four years ago? They know Fallin wouldn’t stand a chance against Drew Edmondson.
