Park concerns should be heard

Muskogee city councilors should have been more considerate to neighborhood residents before changing the name of Robison Park.

Residents near the southeastern Muskogee park spurred the city to make improvements.

The Robison Park Community Association made their voices heard at City Hall.

They raised money to help in the process of upgrading the park with a splash pad, basketball courts, a playground and trails.

But just as the efforts by the park association were beginning to bear fruit, the city received a generous donation from the Russell Ruby Trust.

Shortly after the donation, and without much interaction with the park association, the council changed the name of the park from Robison Park to Ruby Park.

The Ruby family trust should be acknowledged for its donation.

But the people who have known the park as Robison for decades should have been given a proper hearing.

That’s what a city council should do — listen to its constituents.

There can be some compromise here.

Members of the park association plan to voice their concerns to the council.

Now it’s time to see what the council can do to acknowledge the contributions of the association as well as the Ruby family.
