Paul Blair, a businessman and patriot clergyman in Edmond, has made a DVD showing a comparison of the American education system from colonial times to the present, how the systems have evolved over time, and the explanation for the change. In colonial times, life was tough, challenging and one’s survival depended on two necessities: Learning the three R’s in order to overcome multiple life difficulties, and learning to lean on faith in God, one’s source for help from above in order to “make a life.” The DVD illustrates the outcome of maturity, exceptionalism in the individual student, and critical thinking skills in the student in the early days of this nation. Students learned the purpose for which this nation was founded: Namely, to be a vehicle through which the Gospel of Jesus Christ would be dispersed, taken to other nations, not for denominational gain, but for promoting the reality of salvation unto eternal life.
Nowhere now in the American educational system is such knowledge found. In fact, in the 1960s acknowledging “the God factor” was drummed out initially, and now that same stabilizing, God-honoring factor, is no longer welcome and very much despised. The words “In God We Trust” and “so help me, God” today are an anathema to a powerful portion of our citizenry.
Now along comes “the remedy” to ills resident in our educational system: The Common Core. In reading the Internet, there are many examples of how this federally imposed curriculum is doing harm to our students. Teachers having to implement the curriculum (teach to the test mandates), students subjected to this nationwide “one size fits all” curriculum, parents and boards of education who see local control over their children’s education process gone or at least unwanted, textbooks bought from profiteering purveyors presenting inaccurate (even lies) content about the history of this nation to be politically correct — all these groups of people are rising up to oppose the mandated, dumbed down, test-oriented standards which do not facilitate students’ grasp on personal responsibility and love for this country.
