Getting healthy is good for city

It’s a good sign that so many local businesses, schools and organizations are striving to be healthy.

Three dozen groups were recognized recently for being “certified healthy” during a Rotary Club meeting and luncheon.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health is responsible for choosing what businesses and organizations are recognized as “certified healthy.”

Some of the ways businesses, schools and organizations can promote healthy living is by participating in preventative programs, health education, offering physical activities, being tobacco-free, taking leadership roles in the community for health and wellness, and promoting behavioral health and emotional well-being.

We encourage these entities to do so. A business makes for a healthier workforce, which is not only good for the bottom line, but good for Muskogee, too.

It’s no secret Muskogee could be healthier. Nearly 30 percent of county residents are obese, a 9 percent increase from the previous decade, according to a state report last year.

Muskogee Wellness has become a positive force in Muskogee over the past five or so years, to battle not only obesity, but tobacco and other unhealthy living habits.

We hope their momentum continues to grow, and their positive impact on Muskogee is noticeable.
