Students need the proper tools

— Schools must prepare students for the future economy by providing them with the necessary technology today.

That’s becoming a reality in our school districts.

Fort Gibson Public Schools is preparing laptops and tablet computers for use by its students by the start of the school year.

The One-to-One digital device program provides every student from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade with the tools of the present and the future.

Most jobs use computers.

Every student who does not have access to some form of a computer falls behind every day.

Muskogee Public Schools is launching the same kind of program.

MPS students from seventh grade on up will receive use of a laptop computer sometime this year.

The district will provide laptops for students in lower grades to use in the near future.

Both programs have tremendous merit. Both programs deserve the community’s support.

The programs will need time to take full flight. But that’s OK. Both districts are clearly moving in the right direction.

The city of Muskogee also should consider providing the city with wireless Internet access.

This idea was floated a few years. It is something that deserves attention.

If the city can find the funds to provide Wi-Fi, then every student in Muskogee would have a leg up in preparing for the future.
