Congrats to state tourney participants

Congratulations to the Class 4A champion Fort Gibson High School girls basketball team.

These young women battled back from a 12-point deficit with 6 minutes to play to beat Anadarko 50-47 to hoist their second consecutive gold ball.

The Lady Tigers became the first girls team in 4A to win back-to-back state championships in 5-on-5 girls basketball. It also was the team’s third state title in four years.

The team will lose just one player, and already are the favorites to make it three consecutive state titles next year.

We look forward to another stellar year in Fort Gibson.

And let’s not overlook five other teams who advanced to the state tournament, but fell short of their ultimate goal:

• Muskogee High School’s boys team turned it on late in the season, earning a surprise — but well-earned — visit to the tournament. The Roughers lost in the quarterfinals to the No. 1 seed after giving them a battle and nearly pulling off the upset.

• Muskogee High School’s girls team made it to the semifinals with a very young team. If they continue their growth and play with the desire they did this year, they will be good for years to come.

• Fort Gibson High School’s boys basketball team lost in the quarterfinals to eventual runner-up Stilwell. The Tigers had an outstanding year and showed that hard work and determination lead to success.

• Sequoyah High School’s boys team lost in the semifinals to the eventual Class 3A champs. It was a great year for the Indians, who are always a force in basketball.

• Sequoyah High School’s girls team lost in the quarterfinals. Their season ended earlier than they wanted, but it was a very successful one.
