THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Abstinence is the only true way to stay safe

In the paper recently there was an article about a group giving girls a talk encouraging sexual abstinence. While not, perhaps, agreeing with all of their methods, I applaud their efforts. The Bible gives several compelling reasons for abstinence until marriage.

First, because God said so. Our creator knows what’s best for us, and has the right to command us. God values people’s purity so much, that an Israelite girl who didn’t come to her marriage a virgin was to be stoned (Deuteronomy 22:20).

Second, to preserve family happiness. Many a parent’s heart has been broken by their children’s promiscuity. Many a grieving girl has been left with an illegitimate child to raise by herself, if not aborting it first. Contrary to modern thinking, these are not light things. Children who defy their parents are under God’s most horrible curses (Proverbs 30:17) and illegitimacy is never spoken of favorably in scripture (Deuteronomy 23:2, Hebrews 12:8). But even if you’re an unmarried shacked-up couple in a so-called “loving” relationship, you’re still sinning.

Third, to avoid God’s judgments, both physical and spiritual. Committed, heterosexual marriage is the only union in which God has legitimized sex. In Hebrews 13:4, he promises judgment for all who defy this rule. These judgments may be physical ones, taking the form of disease (Proverbs 5:11, Romans 1:27) or innumerable other sorrows. Concerning STD’s, isn’t it interesting that the only people immune to them are faithful married heterosexual people? It’s almost like there’s a God orchestrating things. But even worse are the spiritual plagues God brings. Hardness of heart to any rebuke of your sin, the uncountable griefs God will make sure you experience in your unlawful relationships, and ultimately, damnation if you don’t repent.

Pastors, parents, if you’re not teaching these things, you’re sinning. Parents, if you want to preserve your children’s purity, I strongly encourage you to homeschool and to insist your teenagers use supervised courtship as a means of meeting a spouse.
