We should all help where we can

We encourage everyone to contribute to the 22nd annual National Association of Letter Carriers food drive Saturday.

Food insecurity affects 18.3 percent of the 70,600 people who live in Muskogee County, according to data collected by the U.S. Agriculture Department. Of the 17,500 children who live in Muskogee County, 4,602, or 26.3 percent, are considered food insecure.

“Everything that is donated goes to local food banks and pantries — everything stays local,” said Muskogee letter carrier Jeff Epperson, noting six local pantries benefit from the annual food drive.

Muskogee letter carriers distributed bags in advance of what is considered to be the nation’s largest one-day food drive.

Residents are  asked to fill those bags or others with non-perishable  foods such as canned soups, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, peanut butter, rice or cereal. Residents are asked to set the bags by their mailboxes Saturday morning.

Letter carriers will collect the goods as they deliver and pick up mail along their routes. Letter carriers will pick up donated food at businesses upon request.

It’s a good cause and your contributions help your neighbors.
