Emphasis on water admirable

BOYNTON — We applaud the Muskogee Rotary Club for their efforts to bring drinkable water to places throughout the world.

One Rotarian in particular, Darrell Ward, went to Nicaragua recently to to help dig 14 wells for villages in the western part of the country.

Ward spent nearly five weeks in Nicaragua through a Rotary International project.

Ward said the villagers were the “poorest of the poor.”

“You see their homes are made of cardboard siding,” Ward said. “Some were lucky to have a sheet iron roof.”

Villagers walked two or three miles each day to the nearest water source, usually a polluted lake, river or pond, he said.

Ward, a real estate agent who lives near Webbers Falls, said he heard about the trip through a medical supply network, which works with  Muskogee Rotary.

“I was a mechanic for 30 years, and I went as a support person to work on the rig if there were any problems,” he said.

Ward’s mechanical expertise coupled with the support of the local Rotary chapter shows how much can be achieved by a group of dedicated individuals.

Drinkable water may be taken for granted in the United States, but that is not the case around the world.

The local Rotary chapter has made this one of their missions.

It is an admirable endeavor.
