I’m a 61-year-old white gun-owning (but not gun toting) grandfather that was very disappointed with the verdict in the Zimmerman trial. However, I blame the prosecution for biting off more than they could chew.
In the early ’70s I was on jury duty on a federal bank robbery trial, and I can still remember the 12 of us discussing that if we convicted the defendant wrongly, we would have that on our consciences forever. The judge’s instructions were “beyond a reasonable doubt.”
The prosecution should have charged him with negligence result in death, stalking, and assaulting Trayvon Martin, and disobeying a lawful order. Remember the 911 dispatcher expressly told Zimmerman not to pursue. All he was supposed to do was watch and wait on a real cop.
“Neighborhood watch” is just that. Otherwise it would be called “neighborhood stalk and shoot.” President Obama said that if he had a son he would look like Trayvon. On a dark rainy winter night, my 18-year-old white grandson with his hoodie on would look like Trayvon to a trigger happy idiot.
I am appalled that Zimmerman did not lose his firearm rights. Martin’s parents should sue him for wrongful death in civil court, and Zimmerman should never be allowed to possess any kind of weapon.
I am sure that neither used good judgment that night, but shouldn’t an armed 28-year-old man be held to a much higher standard than a 17-year-old kid?
We don’t need gun control laws, we need idiot control laws.
