We start small but think big

City officials are right to start small and build on efforts to expand and improve Love-Hatbox Sports Complex.

The master plan presented to the City Council could cost up to $50 million to complete. That is a big chunk to swallow.

Gen. Creighton Williams Abrams Jr. said, “When eating an elephant take one bite at a time.”

And so we should. Some of the improvements involve work on existing structures that can be achieved with funding in place. By starting there, the city can build excitement and momentum for the project.

“We want to see things happen immediately,” Ward III Councilor Randy Howard said, noting improvements to Love-Hatbox sporting venues would have the capacity to attract visitors in the near term. “When people see things start to happen, they seem to buy in to it a lot faster.”

But that should be only the beginning. We are starting small, but must think big. The city should pursue funding through grants and community groups.

What we must not do is let the project languish. “One bite at a time” only works if we keep going.

There is a sense of building momentum for improvements in our community. It is a sense of pride but also a sense that so much more is possible.

Let’s make the possible real.
