Do the right thing for our veterans

— I have been contacted by Mr. William Boyd regarding the renaming of HWY 62 in Fort Gibson to “Veterans Memorial Highway.” Please know that I think this is an excellent idea.

I believe our veterans should be honored in every way possible and this fits with the National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, which, sadly, I know is still growing. I am very proud that Fort Gibson has a National Cemetery, as it’s a huge part of our country and town’s history. I think every effort should be made to remind people that pass through Fort Gibson every day of that fact.

At the time you named the highway after me, I was shocked and honored and, at the same time, a little uncomfortable. The dedication was scheduled at a time when I was playing full speed with the Detroit Lions and, unfortunately, could not make it home for the ceremony. I am proud of my accomplishment, but I’ve always felt that I’m undeserving of this honor.

I love Fort Gibson and love when I am able to come home and visit my friends and family for holidays and birthdays. I am blessed to be married to my best friend, Erin, and we currently live in her hometown of Norman. We both stay fairly busy with our new careers but, if the timing is right, I will do everything possible to make the new dedication.

In closing, thank you for naming the highway after me back in 2004 and to the people of Fort Gibson who have continually supported and helped me. For that, I am humbly appreciative.

We should certainly move on and do the right thing for our veterans.

Sincerely,

Teddy Lehman
