THE PEOPLE SPEAK — City should create veterans memorial

I noticed several weeks ago that the Memorial Park put in a request for a Veterans Memorial to the city council. Now I see that the ads for the Veterans Parade on Nov. 9 (not Nov. 11, which is Veterans Day) has a notice in it about a memorial.

The first meeting that was held about a Muskogee County Veterans Memorial, there were many veterans there. Due to the city council saying many things against it, we have sort of dropped it.

Now comes the Memorial Park asking for the memorial. The veterans that I have talked to say “they will not pay money to see a memorial for them.” The veterans also said “we would also have to wait for the gates to open.” Visitors coming to Muskogee would not be too happy about driving several miles to see it.

Last year the Memorial came up again. Most of the veterans are very unhappy about the city being against it. The Memorial Park is mainly a WWII and Navy park. The veterans had enough problems having the city put up a POW/MIA flag. A member of the rainbow division said that we can put up a memorial at their memorial.

We are losing WWII and Korean veterans at the rate of a 1,000 to 1,500 a day. Maybe if the city waits long enough they won’t have to worry about us.
