Playground a boon to park

It’s great news that Muskogee’s parks just keep getting better.

The latest project — new playground equipment at Honor Heights Park — is meant to be a “destination playground” for a “destination park.”

The plans look ambitious and remarkable. The $336,000 project will include a nature-themed playground and other amenities. The funding will come from grants from the playground’s vendor, GameTime, and the City of Muskogee Foundation.

Parks Superintendent Mark Wilkerson said the playground equipment should be installed by spring.

Muskogee is lucky to have such a great parks system, and even luckier that the city supports it.

Parks are key to not only our well-being, but tourism — especially Honor Heights.

According to visitor tracking information provided by the Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce, park attendance continues to grow with an estimated 258,000 people visiting so far this year, up from 160,000 in 2012 and 131,000 in 2011.

The new equipment should lift those numbers even higher.
