Foundation helps education

— When one door closes, another door opens.

That was reinforced to Muskogee High School drama teacher Penny McGill recently.

MHS was one of 30 schools from across the nation that had been named a finalist in NBC’s “Smash” Make a Musical Constructed by Lowe’s.

Five winning schools would receive money to improve their theater facilities after a national vote.

Muskogee lost out on that money, but won two-fold when the Education Foundation of Muskogee awarded McGill’s department with a $10,000 grant.

“I just need to breathe,” McGill told the Phoenix after being awarded the grant. “The first thing that comes to the top of my head is our curtains. They’re in such bad shape, and we can replace them and not worry anymore.”

McGill said the theater department also rents lighting for shows, so she hopes to buy lights and microphones.

McGill’s grant was one of many the Education Foundation awarded last week.

The foundation gave out almost $24,000.

That is amazing work for the foundation to help students.

Our community is lucky to have people such as those involved in the Education Foundation.

Great things can happen as a result of just a few good people’s efforts in a good cause.

We applaud the foundation for its work.
