Pet owners should spay, neuter

Muskogee Animal Shelter needs your help.

The shelter was at critical capacity last week.

Adoptions had dried up. Strays and pet surrenders had risen.

The employees decided to create adoption events throughout the summer.

The shelter held the first of the events at Tractor Supply last Saturday.

Animals were available for adoption for the low cost of $25.

All the dogs available had passed the shelter’s temperament tests.

The original plan was to have adoption events every week.

But the first went so well that the shelter has scheduled the next event for June 8.

That’s the good news.

The bad news would have been what happens to the animals if enough aren’t adopted.

“If we don’t get some of these animals adopted, it’s the end of the road,” shelter employee Kelly Williams said last week. “We’ve worked so hard here, and we absolutely do not want to go back to the way it was.”

We encourage you to go to the shelter and save a life.

We encourage you to find a friend there.

But we would be remiss if we did not remind you to spay and neuter the pets you have now.

If more pet owners would do that the shelter would not have as many residents.

If more pet owners spayed and neutered, then some of the wonderful animals would not have to be killed to make room for others.

Please spay and neuter your pets.
