Picnics can bring us together

— With the explosive growth of social networking media such as Facebook and Twitter, we sometimes forget to be social face to face.

The Muskogee Neighborhood Outreach Coalition is working to change that.

The coalition has scheduled three more neighborhood picnics throughout the summer in city parks.

The picnics will be a way for residents near the parks to get information about improving their neighborhood and make friends.

“We are trying to gather citizens of this community together and get them involved with meeting each other,” said Laura Wickizer, a marketing specialist with Neighbors Building Neighborhoods.

The idea has tremendous promise.

For instance, law enforcement has long encouraged residents to watch out for each other. That’s much easier to do when you actually know your neighbors.

Muskogee needs to come together as a community.

One way of the best ways is to better get to know each other.

The picnics have tremendous potential to bridge those real and perceived gaps that separate us from our neighbors.

The picnics are a good idea that deserves our participation.
