THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Here’s to US — it’s been a long time coming

— Here’s to US. It’s been a long time coming. My wife says I live too much in the past. Like all women and Republicans, she’s always right. Partly I had too good a time in the past and the future terrifies me.

Way back when the earth was flat (May ’58), my temporary associates and I spent a very pleasant evening tossing flying fish back over board. For a group of southern and midwestern teenagers, this was downright kicky. All we had ever done was drown bait for bass and catfish. A year later we would all be in the European woods waiting to become as one with a Russian fireball. Good ’ole Ike told the Kremlin to open the road to Berlin or we would start shooting. I spent another pleasant evening playing poker in a 1 1/2 ton trailer. I was praying I wouldn’t end up with aces and eights. Years later and only a short space from the earlier event, a young soldier said if the situation got messy, he would head for home. I asked him if he really thought home would even be in the same time zone as he had left it?

Again, I was in Korea. I got call to run outside and get my picture taken. As I stuck my head out the door a MIG-17 flew over chased by two ROK F-86s. This happened on two tours. I thought the commies really liked me.

When I pass to the other side, I expect a German bend-in-the-middle bus to be waiting at the curb. I’ll be on my way to heaven but I want a side trip to 1959 Munich or Amsterdam I had a lot of fun too. Again, here’s to US that made the trip even part way.
