College baseball roundup

Phoenix staff reports

ORU 4, Northwestern 3

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Jake Clouatre scored on an infield single by Will Watson in the seventh inning against losing pitcher Alec Smith, the third of five ORU pitchers.

The Golden Eagles’ regular season comes to an end with a 23-30 overall record, 16-11 in Southland Conference play, while NWLA finished its season at 16-40 overall and 5-22.

ORU had five hits, no one with more than one, and scored all of its runs in the third. Nate Goro started things with a double to left, scoring on a bunt single by Brandon Healy. Kevin Cho, who also reached on a bunt single earlier in the inning, was driven home as Jose Trevino singled to left. Trying to throw Healy out at third, the Demon catcher threw the ball back into left field, allowing Healy to cross the plate.

Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, the Demons knotted the game at three in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double into the right field corner by Matt Burns.

ORU will take on Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the Southland tournament in Sugarland, Texas, at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The Lumberjacks swept the Golden Eagles in early April in Nacogdoches, Texas.

W. Va. 5, OSU 4

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State’s ninth-inning rally fell short Saturday as the Cowboys suffered a loss to West Virginia in the regular season finale at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

OSU finishes the regular season 39-14 overall, and with a 13-10 Big 12 Conference mark. The Cowboys will be either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed at next week’s Big 12 Baseball Championship in Oklahoma City. The tournament bracket will be released later today. West Virginia finishes 31-25 overall and 13-11 in the Big 12.

OSU starter Mark Robinette suffered his first loss in a Cowboys’ uniform as the junior right-hander allowed three runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings to fall to 5-1.

Auburn 11, Arkansas 6

AUBURN, Ala. – Blake Austin drove in three runs, while Jordan Ebert went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored as Auburn defeated Arkansas in the regular season finale on Saturday at Plainsman Park.

Arkansas drops to 35-19 overall and 18-11 in Southeastern Conference play, while Auburn is now 33-22 and 13-17 in league play.

Dominic Ficociello had a pair of hits and drove in three runs to lead the Razorbacks at the plate. Brett McAfee hit his first homer of the season and went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Brian Anderson added two hits and scored three runs.

Kansas St. 5, OU 2

MANHATTAN, Kan. – By the time Sooners had their bats swinging, it was too little too late as Kansas State (39-15, 16-7 Big 12) beat Oklahoma (35-19, 12-11) 5-2 Saturday at Tointon Family Stadium.

The Sooners scored their only runs in the ninth when Max White led off with a stand-up triple and scored the next at-bat on Lorenzana infield single. Hector Lorenzana reached third on an error during a Matt Oberste base hit and then scored when Taylor Alspaugh beat out a double-play attempt.

Today’s regular season finale has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. due to forecasted inclement weather.
