Cowboy pitcher is week's best

IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State’s Tyler Nurdin has been named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week for games played May 13-20, it was announced Monday by the league office. This marks the second time this season the sophomore has earned a Big 12 weekly award as he was the conference’s Newcomer of the Week on April 29.

Nurdin tossed his second-career shutout to lead OSU to a series-clinching 5-0 win over West Virginia last Friday. The southpaw faced just four batters over the minimum while allowing only four hits and striking out seven, one shy of his career high.

In improving to 4-2 on the season, Nurdin dominated one of the Big 12’s top offensive clubs. He retired the first eight WVU hitters and 13 of the first 14. In the fifth, the Mountaineers collected three of their four hits in the game, all singles, to load the bases with one out in a scoreless game, but Nurdin retired the next two hitters to get out of the jam.

Over the final four innings, Nurdin retired the side in order three times. The lone baserunner he allowed during that span came on a walk to open the eighth – his only free pass of the game – a runner he quickly erased on a fielder’s choice before ending the inning with a double play. Nurdin’s shutout lowered his ERA to 1.76, which ranks fifth in the Big 12.

OSU has now had a player honored with a Big 12 weekly award each of the last five weeks and seven times this season
