OSU wrestling wins opener

STILLWATER – The No. 3 Oklahoma State wrestling squad opened its 2012-13 season with a 35-10 win over Pennsylvania, highlighted by pins at the 157, 197 and 285 weight classes.

The Cowboys had a rough start, losing three of the first four matches. At 133 pounds, Jon Morrison picked up the first points for OSU with an 11-3 major decision over Geoffrey Bostany.

Providing the momentum needed for the Cowboys was 157-pounder Alex Dieringer, who, in his first starting performance for OSU, pinned Mark Pinero in just 49 seconds. He was followed by Tyler Caldwell’s 15-4 major decision over Casey Kent and top-ranked 174-pounder Chris Perry’s 21-6 technical fall over Ian Korb. Chris Chionuma also had his first start for the Cowboys and claimed an 18-3 technical fall over Canaan Bethea in 5:06.

The final two matches resulted in pins when Blake Rosholt finished his opponent in 4:23 and Alan Gelogaev rolled Kyle Cowan in 5:18.

OU, TU volleyball learn NCAA foes

The Oklahoma and Tulsa volleyball teams learned who, when and where they will play in the first round of the NCAA Division I volleyball tournament as the field was unveiled on Sunday.

The Sooners (21-10) will play Arizona State (20-13) in the opening match at 6 p.m. Friday in Provo, Utah. The winner gets the winner of host Brigham Young (26-3) and New Mexico State (22-10), who play in Friday’s second match, at 8 p.m. Saturday.

The Golden Hurricane (26-9), who received the Conference USA’s automatic berth by winning the conference tournament, travels to Gainesville, Fla., to meet host Florida (25-4) at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The first match of the day features Miami (25-5) and College of Charleston (26-7) at 4 p.m. with the two winners squaring off at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

TU men’s soccer bounced

TULSA – The Tulsa men’s soccer team saw the San Diego Toreros score two goals in a five-minute span midway through the second half, erasing a 1-0 Golden Hurricane lead to hand Tulsa a 2-1 defeat in the third round of the NCAA Division I men’s soccer tournament.

Tulsa (14-5-1) goal came when junior Cristian Mata received a pass from his freshman brother Omar Mata at the 12:12 mark and put a shot past USD goalkeeper Drew Ilijevski for his 14th goal of the season.

Tulsa goalkeeper Mark Pais finished the match with two saves while Ilijevski rejected four Golden Hurricane shots.
