College baseball roundup

Phoenix Staff Reports

— ORAL ROBERTS 6, HOUSTON BAPTIST 5 — Jose Trevino’s walk off, infield single with two outs in the ninth scored Graham McIntyre to lift ORU (20-17, 8-8 Southland Conference) over visiting Houston Baptist (16-18, 6-10).

WEST VIRGINIA 7, OU 0 — In Norman, WVU (18-15, 3-6 Big 12)  scored five runs in the top of the first on six hits, including a two-run double to the left field corner by left fielder Jacob Rice. Sooners right-hander Corey Copping settled down after that and retired eight in a row before allowing a two-out single in the fourth, but the damage was done. OU is 24-15 and 4-6 heading into tonight’s second game of the three-game set.

SOUTHWEST BAPTIST 5, NORTHEASTERN ST. 3 — The RiverHawks (19-22, 15-18 MIAA) held a 3-0 lead early in the contest, but a late rally from the Bearcats (23-18, 19-13) and costly errors from the visitors allowed the home team to secure the series-opening triumph. Redshirt freshman Caleb Hill went 3-for-4 in the contest. He registered a career-best three hits for the second-straight game. Seniors Ryan Staggs and David Weber added two hits each as the RiverHawks outhit the Bearcats 12-9.

EASTERN 9, CONNORS 2 — Eastern pounded out 14 hits against four Connors pitchers, led early, and never trailed in dropping a loss on No. 4 Connors State  at Biff Thompson Field on Thursday.

Connors (35-8, 7-3) and Eastern (21-20, 6-4) will meet at Connors again at 7 tonight. The Cowboys will be without catcher Jarrard Poteete, who drew an ejection after exchanging words with Eastern pitcher Cota Glover after hitting a double in the third inning. Glover walked toward second and apparently said something to Poteete, who replied to the comment and was ejected.

Trevor Crone hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot.
