Sooners recover to beat Texas; Baylor drops OSU

— NORMAN – Senior forward Romero Osby scored a career-high 29 points as the Oklahoma men’s basketball team defeated Texas, 73-67, Monday evening at the Lloyd Noble Center.

The Sooners avoided losing consecutive games for the first time this season, following a loss up with a convincing win for the fourth time.

Osby, who shot 9-of-15 and also led OU with eight rebounds, took over for the Sooners on several occasions. Osby’s third 3-pointer of the year with 12:26 left in the game gave OU its first double-digit lead of the game (48-36) and kickstarted nine consecutive points by the senior.

This was after Osby scored OU’s final nine points of the first half to help the Sooners recover from their biggest deficit (24-19) of the game and take a 30-26 lead into the locker room.

Off to its worst start to conference play since 1976, Texas (8-10, 0-5) had no answer for Osby after top rebounder Jonathan Holmes left with a right wrist injury with just under 7 minutes left in the first half. Osby checked back into the game about 3 minutes later and took over.

Junior forward Amath M’Baye, who scored 15 for OU, completed several alley-oop dunks that sent the LNC crowd into a frenzy. Freshman guard Buddy Hield, who recorded 12 points, was on the other end of a few of those highlight reel plays, leading OU with four assists.

Senior guard Sam Grooms hit a free throw with 1:45 remaining to give the Sooners a 69-58 lead, as OU seemingly had the victory in hand.

Texas’ Jaylen Bond split a pair of free throws and Ioannis Papaetrou nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to shrink OU’s lead to 69-65 with a minute left.

Grooms split a pair of free throws of his own to put OU back up five, the Sooners followed it up with a defensive stop and Osby iced the game with two more free throws.
