All-Big 12 team announced

Phoenix staff, wire reports

— IRVING, Texas  — Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk and TCU defensive end Devonte Fields are the Big 12 preseason players of the year.

The preseason All-Big 12 teams were released Wednesday as selected by media members who cover the conference. Three Oklahoma State players — wide receiver Josh Stewart, defensive lineman Calvin Barnett and linebacker Shaun Lewis — made the team as well as a pair of Oklahoma Sooners — center Gabe Ikard and defensive back Aaron Colvin.

Seastrunk, the former Oregon transfer who will be a junior, averaged 139 yards rushing over the last six games in 2012 and was the conference’s top offensive newcomer.

Fields was the Big 12 defensive player of the year last season as a freshman, when he had 10 sacks. TCU coach Gary Patterson said in May that Fields is suspended for the first two games this season for an unspecified violation of university and team policies.

Stewart, of Denton, Texas, had 1,210 receiving yards in making first team AP All-Big 12 in 2012. Barnett, who played at Tulsa Washington and Navarro (Texas) Junior College, had 30 tackles, including 24 solos, and was a Big 12 coaches defensive newcomer of the year and first-team pick in 2012. Lewis, out of Missouri City, Texas, was a second-team all-league pick last season after finishing the year with 58 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss.

Colvin and Ikard were also named All-Big 12 first-team selections by AP and the coaches in 2012 with Ikard a two-time selection. The Jenks product who graduated this month with a 4.0 GPA, has had 37 starts on the line. Colvin, an Owasso native, led the team with 11 pass breakups and was third in tackles.

West Virginia’s Charles Sims, a transfer from Houston, is the preseason newcomer of the year.

Also on the team are two former Oklahoma high school players now at Kansas State. Both are specialists — punt returner Tramaine Thompson from Jenks and kick returner Tyler Lockett, who played at Tulsa Washington.
