Published September 04, 2008 10:27 pm - FGHS at Sequoyah Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Radio: KTLQ 1350 AM Redemption's on Fort Gibson minds By Kenton Brooks Phoenix Sports Writer By Jeremy Short Phoenix Correspondent Fort Gibson will try to take the first step toward redemption of a season lost when they open the season tonight against 2A No. 10 Sequoyah. “We need to try to keep momentum on our side,” said Fort Gibson head coach Jeff Taylor. “We need to create turnovers on defense and make some big plays on special teams.” The Tigers will try to bounce back from last season's 0-10 season and return to the level of success they are accustomed to as regular playoff contenders. “We've had success in the scrimmages,” Taylor said. “The kids are fired up and ready to play a game.” One player the Tigers will certainly have to watch out for is Sequoyah's Chris Littlehead. The 6-foot-3, 310-pound lineman will be a big part of Sequoyah chances for success. “I expect him to dominate both sides of the ball,” said Sequoyah head coach Brent Scott. A key to the Tigers’ success will be how effectively they slow down the Indians wing-T offense that put up big numbers last season. This task maybe a little easier with Sequoyah losing several impact players including Hunter Cunningham (Northeastern State) and Nathan Stanley (Mississippi). The Tigers hope seniors Ben Barker (53 tackles last season) and Quinn Norman will be up to the task of slowing down the Indians offense. “They mix it up pretty good on offense,” Taylor said. “We've been working on their misdirection.” Sequoyah will now look to quarterback Garrett Drapeau and running back Zach Gann to lead the way. “Our offense will be fine,” Scott said. “We've got depth on the line and at the skill positions.” Offensively, the Tigers will look to quarterback Taylor Richey to move the ball against a Sequoyah defense that boasts several talented players including Littlehead and linebacker Jacob Stopp. Richey passed for 752 yards and two touchdowns last season.
