Hilldale, Fort Gibson both troubled by turnovers

By Kenton Brooks

Phoenix Sports Writer

If Hilldale coach Don Hendrix and Fort Gibson coach Jeff Taylor talked on the phone over the last couple of days, they would’ve commiserated about same fate that fell on their teams last Friday in District 4A-4 losses at home.

Both teams had problems with too many turnovers.

Hendrix’ Hornets fumbled six times — and lost four — in their 34-6 setback to Broken Bow.

“I told the team at halftime that we were doing OK, if we can hold onto the ball long enough to make a first down,” he said. “We started inside the 25 (yard line) on our first three possessions. When we finally did get the ball, we couldn’t get any field position because we kept giving it back to them.”

Taylor can sympathize as the Tigers turned the ball over five times in their 54-14 defeat at home against Wagoner.

“They’re a good ballclub and we had some bad things happen to us,” he said. “We had two (turnovers) in the first half and then we started to come back a little bit and scored two touchdowns. We had a little momentum on our side. Then, we had three more turnovers. You can’t have that many turnovers against a good team.”

But it wasn’t all gloom and doom for both coaches.

Hendrix saw some good things from his Hornets against the team that’s ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press poll this week. He was particularly pleased with the play of the defense.

“Our game plan was good and in the passes they tried to throw, they didn’t do anything big on us,” he said. “I don’t feel as bad as I did last week (against Poteau). We had a chance to win last week. The way the game started (with a fumble on the opening kickoff) and progressed, we weren’t given a chance (against Broken Bow).”

Taylor Chalk was moved to tailback from quarterback. He ran for 39 yards on 10 carries.

“He helped us and made a couple of good runs,” Hendrix said. “He’s also a threat to catch passes. It was a mutual decision to put him there because (Dalton) Pantle is out (with a bruised pulmonary artery). Dalton will be out until the doctors think it’s healed up because he was bleeding into his lungs and that’s not good.”

The Tigers don’t have any of the serious injuries that their Hilldale neighbors are dealing with, and Taylor was happy with some of the things he saw. Fort Gibson scored twice in the second quarter to cut Wagoner’s lead to 27-14 at halftime.
