Thunder's Atkins takes to role of mentor Atkins came away impressed when, still as a member of the Nuggets, he watched Westbrook and the Thunder nearly upset Denver before falling 122-120 on Jan. 2.
“He is one of the most athletic guards in our league. The guy is 6-3, explosive, extremely fast, has long arms. I was watching him ... and I couldn’t believe how fast he was,” Atkins said. “He has all the tools. ... I look forward to working with him.” Westbrook said the feeling is mutual. “My ears are always open to listen to anything, especially from a guy that’s been in the league for 10 years now,” he said. Brooks said having Atkins around will only help Westbrook, who is averaging 14.1 points, 4.9 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game. “He doesn’t have to worry about Russell not listening to him, because Russell is very coachable,” Brooks said. “He understands that he has to get better and he wants to get better, and that’s a real difference.”
