Muskogee loses by 1; Eufaula takes two games

Phoenix Staff Writer

MESA, Ariz. — It wasn’t exactly the way Muskogee baseball team wanted to start off the Hawk Triple Play Classic.

The Roughers (4-4) fell 4-3 to Desert Ridge, Ariz. in the opening round on Monday. MHS’ Antonio Horn led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double and moved to third base on a sacrifice. But that’s where he stayed as Josh Linn and losing pitcher Archie Bradley (0-3) struck out to end the game.

“It was definitely a hard one to lose,” MHS coach Mack Chambers said. “We came here with the idea of being 5-0. We have to regroup now and try to go 4-1. There’s still plenty of baseball left to play.”

Bradley pitched a complete game and struck out 10 batters.

The Roughers got all their runs in the fifth inning. Cam’Ron Summers doubled home Linn, Bradley singled in Wes Newman and Bradley scored on a throwing error in attempt to throw out Summers.

Muskogee plays two games today, facing Fort Collins, Colo., at 11 a.m. Muskogee time and Dobson, Ariz., at 2 p.m.

Eufaula wins two

The Ironheads are still unbeaten after winning two games over Arizona schools in the Triple Play Classic on Monday. Improving to 7-0, coach Stacy Helms’ team beat Sunnyside 2-1 and Mesa 9-3.

In the win over Sunnyside, the Ironheads scored twice with two outs in the sixth inning as Andre Scherncel singled in Trevor Walch and Justin Burns singled in Scherncel. Winning pitcher Ethan Sharp (2-0) struck out eight batters in throwing a complete-game victory.

Walch had a solo home run and a two-run double in the win over Mesa.

Matt Helms added two hits, including a double, while his cousin Ryan had two hits and two RBIs. Burns, Hayden Walch and Kyle Bangert each added two hits. Trevor Walch (2-0) was the winning pitcher.

“Both Trevor and Ethan stepped up and pitched more than they have this season,” coach Stacy Helms said. “It’s warm here and they could do that. We’re playing well right now.”

Eufaula also returns to action today at 11 a.m. Muskogee time against another Oklahoma school, Enid, in Mesa.
