MHS finishes fifth in Arizona tournament

MESA, Ariz. — Muskogee’s baseball team returns to Oklahoma after taking fifth place and beating Tucson, Ariz., 14-1 in the final day of the Hawk Triple Play Classic on Thursday.

The Roughers, banging out 13 hits, won their fourth straight game to improve to 8-4 overall and finish the tourney at 4-1.

“We played well out here,” coach Mack Chambers said. “We wanted to come out here, work out a few kinks and we changed up our lineup a little. We want to come back to Oklahoma and get this thing rolling.”

The Roughers have plenty of momentum, scoring four runs each in the first, second and third innings and two more in the fourth to win Thursday’s game by the run-rule. Trever Bowden (4-0) struck out seven batters and gave up just one hit — a solo home run.

Bowden also slugged a home run, a two-run blast in the third inning, for one of his two hits.

DeAndre Hamilton, Wes Newman, Archie Bradley and Mitch Stevenson each added two hits for the Roughers. Newman drove in two runs. Antonio Horn slugged a two-run home run in the second inning, his fourth of the season.

“We hit the ball extremely well, one through nine in the batting order,” Chambers said.

Muskogee returns home to play Fort Gibson at the MHS diamond at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Eufaula falls in finale

The Ironheads (7-3) didn’t quite have the success the Roughers had, losing to Highland Park 11-0 in their final game to extend their winning streak to three games. Eufaula finished 2-3 in the tourney.

Coach Stacy Helms’ squad had just two hits —singles by Matt Helms and Travis Pratt — in the game that was shortened because of the run rule. Matt Helms was the losing pitcher as Eufaula had eight errors.

“The errors are what got us,” Stacy Helms said. “You can’t come out and make those kind of errors.”

Eufaula began driving back home Thursday, a 20-hour and 1,100-mile trip.

“Our (pitching) arms are still tender,” Stacy Helms added. “We got quite a few innings in our first two wins here.”
