Sprints up next at Outlaw Motor Speedway

Special to the Phoenix

Sprint Car champions aplenty will be at Outlaw Motor Speedway tonight competing in a special feature.

The open-cockpit cars will race as part of the regular program that will return to normal after last week’s gigantic Modified spectacular that had a guaranteed $50,000 purse. Racing starts at 8 p.m.

Sprint cars from the Oil Capital Racing Series (out of Tulsa) will join the Pure Stocks, Hobby Stocks, E-Mods and Modifieds on the program. The sprints will be racing for a purse or $4,000, according to Barry Grabel, promoter of the Oil Capital Series.

"We’re expecting 18-28 cars," Grabel said. "Our car count was 28 last weekend at Creek County (the organization’s home track in Sapulpa.)."

Mike Goodman of Tulsa, a two-time winner in special races at OMS , will head the list of sprint drivers that will be on hand. Roy Larkin of Tulsa, a former Creek County champ, is also slated to race. Jamie Passmore of Rose, also a previous winner here and last week’s Creek County feature winner, will be in the field.

“We’re expecting to put on a good show," Grabel said. "There is lots of excitement in sprint car racing."

Eric Shannon, OMS track manager, said the special show "is part of the efforts of new promoter Danny Womack to present the best possible racing programs to fans." The sprints will run a 30-lap feature with heat races determining the lineup, according to Grabel. The number of heat races will depend on the car count.

The sprints are returning return after a two year absence from OMS. The show will be sponsored by Creek Nation Casino, which will be giving out prizes to the first 500 fans through the gate and will hand out free-play vouchers while supplies last.
