Northeastern State women’s golfer remains in first at NCAA Division West Regional

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Northeastern State’s Stephanie Bird continues to lead in the medalist standings with a 146 through two rounds of NCAA Division II West Regional women’s golf tournament after Tuesday’s action at The Legacy Golf Resort.

Bird shot a 2-over par 74 Tuesday after shooting an even-par 72 on Monday. She started the second round with three straight bogeys, but birdied the No. 7, 11 and 15 holes after bogeying No. 14 and 17.

While Bird remains atop the 33-player field, NSU slipped in the team standings from second to fifth. The RiverHawks carded a 314 and combined with the 315 on Monday, they have a 629 through the two rounds of the three-round tournament.

Courtney Epps, Bird’s teammate at NSU, slipped from being tied for second to tied for 11th after her second round. She shot a 7-over 79 in Tuesday’s round.

The other NSU golfers include Katie Miller in 24th (84-79—163), Taysha Butler tied for 29th (84-84—168) and Shaunda Petree tied for 30th (87-82—169).

Hilldale High School graduate and Central Oklahoma freshman Raelynn Farthing is tied with Petree for 30th. Farthing shot an 85 Tuesday after carding an 84 in the first round.

Farthing double bogeyed the No. 5 and 15 holes and tripled the No. 17 and shot a 9 on the par-5 No. 14 hole. She also birdied No. 9 and 12.

The tournament concludes today with the final 18 holes. The top two teams advance from the regionals to the NCAA Championships on May 11-17 in Houston.

NSU men stay seventh

AUSTIN, Texas — Northeastern State’s Sam Powell dropped to a four-way tie for 12th place through two rounds of the NCAA Division II South/South Central Regional at Grey Rock Golf Club.

Powell shot 4-over par 75 Tuesday and that gives him a two-day total of 4-over 146.

NSU remains tied for seventh in the team standings. The RiverHawks carded a 299 Tuesday for a 598 for the tourney and St. Edward’s University leads with a 558 after carding rounds of 278 and 280.
