PHOENIX, Ariz. — Stephanie Bird knows her way around the NCAA Division II Golf Championships as the Northeastern State University junior is making her second straight appearance in the tournament after qualifying out of the West Regional on Wednesday.

Bird shot a 3-over par 75 in the final round to finish with a three-day total of 221 and finish second in the medalist standings and 33-player field at The Legacy Golf Course.

The top two golfers from the regional qualify for the May 11-17 national tournament in Houston.

A native of Las Vegas, Bird had birdies on the No. 3 and No. 9 holes, but she bogeyed the No. 6, No. 10, No. 11, No. 12 and No. 14 holes in her final found.

She shot a 2-over par 74 on Tuesday and an even-par 72 in Monday’s first round.

As a team, NSU finished fifth in the six-team field with a 945 after carding a total of 316 in the last round. The RiverHawks had rounds of 315 and 314 before Wednesday.

Tarleton State won the regional team title and Tarleton’s Shradhanjaili Singh was the top medalist after shooting a 3-under 69 in the final round.

The other NSU golfers included Courtney Epps tied for 10th with her three-round total of 230, Katie Miller tied for 23rd (244), Taysha Butler placed 30th (252) and Cave Springs’ Shaunda Petree was 32nd (254).

Meawhile, Hilldale High School graduate and the University of Central Oklahoma freshman Raelynn Farthing finished in a three-way tie for 26th place with her 248.

Farthing, though, shot her best round of the tournament with a 7-over par 79 on Wednesday. She had rounds of 84 and 85 prior to the last day.

In Wednesday’s round, Farthing double bogeyed No. 5 and bogeyed the third, fourth, sixth, 13th and 14th holes.

NSU men finish seventh

AUSTIN, Texas — Northeastern State’s Jeff Cox shot a 2-under par 69 Wednesday to finish in a tie for 10th place at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional golf tournament at the Grey Rock Golf Club.
