Boynton driver stays hot with Pure Stock victory

Special to the Phoenix

OKTAHA – For James Gillean, racing at Outlaw Motor Speedway Friday night was all about the money.

The Boynton driver drove off with the checkered flag in the Fourth Annual Pure Stock Challenge, claiming the $1,000 top prize. It was his third straight triumph at the track.

Starting on the inside second row, Gillean had the lead by the end of lap two. From there he drove a consistent race to the checkered flag.

He used the low groove very effectively going into the turns and then drifting high into the straights. Only once did he deviate from that path in the 25-lap chase, and that was on a restart after lap 11.

The only thing that slowed him down was a caution for debris on the track during lap 17. But he was up to the challenge on the restart and held off a pair of Tahlequah drivers — Brandy Justice and Jason Ward – who finished second and third.

Peggs’ Brandon Holman beat Gillean and Oktaha’s Gene Whittle for the win last season. Gillean is the career leader in division feature wins at the track with 26.

Meanwhile, it was a good night for Patrick Goodnight and a bad one for Porter’s Carl Conley in the Economy Modified division.

Conley was running a comfortable race – leading Goodnight and the rest of the E-Mod field by six seconds with six laps remaining. Then, he pulled into the infield with mechanical problems, enabling Goodnight to go ahead and eventually win his first feature of the year.

Goodnight had to withstand a furious late surge by Haskell’s Danny Womack for his first win. There was barely a bumper between the two at the finish line. Springdale’s Frank Foster was third..

Accidents claimed 11 of the field of 20 cars that started the race. There were eight caution flags.

In Hobby Stock, Kerney Weaver drove a spirited race to win the his first A feature of the season. The Muskogee driver held off Mike Hargis of Huntsville, Ark., to the checkered flag.

Weaver led from the start, but his win was not easy. Three other drivers, division points leader Dale Richardson of Muskogee and Brookin Stephens of Spiro joined Hargus in keeping the pressure on Weaver, and all four had a shot at pulling out the victory going into the last lap.

Richardson had the best shot, but he got pinched to the outside and finished fourth behind Stephens, who forged ahead in the backstretch.

Muskogeean Charles Randolph, overcoming a driving error six laps from the finish, battled back to win the Modified feature when defending points champion and race leader Mike Withrow left the track with a left-rear flat.

Randolph, whose father Charles Sr., was a notable driver at old Thunderbird Speedway, was bidding for his first feature win at the track, but a mistake on a restart after a caution on lap 14 gave Withrow all the space he needed to get to the front of the pack. Diving out of turn for the green flag, Randolph’s car got loose and wiggled ever so slightly as Withrow drove by.
