ARDMORE — Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team posted a 20-under par total of 540 during its first two rounds at The Maxwell on Saturday at Dornick Hills Country Club to stand in second place.
The Cowboys finished the first day three shots behind Michigan and three shots ahead of Oklahoma City. OSU held a four-shot lead after carding a 266 during the morning round, but slipped into second after posting a 274 during Round Two. The Wolverines carded a 267 during their second round to move to the top of the leaderboard.
Michigan also produced the first-day individual leader in Bill Rankin, who fired rounds of 67 and 66 for a 7-under 133 total.
Three shots behind is Cowboy freshman Kevin Tway, who is coming off a runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championship and is seeking his first career win. The Edmond, native opened with a 67 before carding a 69 during the afternoon. With his 4-under 136 total, Tway finished as the only Cowboy under par on the day.
Fellow freshman Rickie Fowler wrapped up the day tied for ninth place at 1-over 141. After opening with a 68, the Murrieta, Calif., native carded a 73 to close out the day.
A pair of Cowboys came in among the group tied for 21st as junior Trent Leon and sophomore Trent Whitekiller turned in 144 totals. Leon posted rounds of 69 and 75, while Whitekiller carded a pair of 72s on the day.
Freshman Mark Johnson came in with rounds of 73 and 72 to end the day tied for 29th place.
Competing as an individual, junior Jon McLean posted rounds of 72 and 70 to finish tied for 13th place at 142.
Tulsa is sixth at 550 after a round of 276. Nico Geyger shot 69 and is the ninth-place group at 141 and Oklahoma is tied for eighth with Colorado at 560. The Sooners shot a 278 on Saturday and Jesse Schutte leads OU golfers with an 18th-place 143. He shot a second-round 71.
The tournament ends today.
