Rougherette is voted MVP

By Mike Kays
Phoenix Sports Editor

“Of our seven losses, two were to Muskogee and two were to Sequoyah. Both had great games every time we played. I'd hate to face eight or nine more of them in a game.”

Rogers took a team that showed some inconsistency early and beat both Muskogee and Fort Gibson at the state tournament.

“We were sporadic all year. On some occasions we could beat anybody and on other occasions we wouldn’t have beaten a good junior-high team,” Rogers said. “We were just able to peak at the right time and that’s what counts, I guess.”

Hamilton, Bowin and Gore’s Kera Smith were the only repeat selections on the team. Muskogee, a 6A quarterfinalist, had four selections — Hamilton, Wagner as the designated hitter, catcher Boo Syrus and outfielder Madison Reed. Sequoyah had both Hammer sisters, Haskell had shortstop Rachel Criner and outfielder Amber Moats.

Webbers Falls, which made the state tournament in Class A for the first time ever, also had two selections — shortstop Kimmy Carter and third baseman Ramie Toddy. Fort Gibson, which made the 6A semifinals, also had two selections — pitcher Taylor Pride and first baseman Hayley Jaynes.

Warner third baseman Sheena Bullard and outfielders Brittany Cantrell of Hilldale, Megan Alsenay of Keys and Sydney Sloan of Vian were single-entries.

Members of the Phoenix sports staff and area coaches voted on the team.
