Rain washes 2 matchups, creates 1

Phoenix staff report

Rain on summer baseball has been like gas price hikes — it keeps coming.

Monday’s scheduled summer ball games between Muskogee-Stilwell and Fort Gibson-Keys were canceled due to the weather, and things aren’t looking good for today either — even as Muskogee and Fort Gibson combine teams for a scheduled doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. with a native American all-star team.

The all-star squad is a group of area kids who will next month compete in a tournament in Arizona organized by “4 Love of the Game.” The Oklahoma “4 Love of the Game” will play a tournament in July in Arizona and will be introduced at an Arizona Diamondbacks game while there. In turn, the Diamondbacks will run a clinic for the 16 teams who will participate.

Area players selected for the team include Muskogee’s John Hamilton, Michael Vieira, Wes Newman and Trever Bowden along with Sequoyah’s Hunter Cunningham and Oktaha’s Derrick Ellison. The Muskogee quartet all play on the MHS summer team and should end up playing with them today.

“We’ve both got a mix of kids gone to church camps, other commitments and such,” Fort Gibson coach James Parnell said. “We’ll put a team together from both and hopefully get it in.”

The all-star team is being coached by former high school coaches Scott Robison of Okemah and Wiley Ryal of Henryetta.

Also on Tuesday, weather permitting, Hilldale’s summer team hosts Sapulpa in a 6 p.m. doubleheader.
