Arkansas driver gets bounty money, beats track co-owner in race
OKTAHA – Just one little mistake and bump was all it took for Clay Julian to pick up an extra $300 in racing Friday night at Outlaw Motor Speedway with his second feature win of the season.
Julian, from Ozark, Ark, picked up the cash from a bounty on Danny Womack, put on him by an Okmulgee car dealer who offered it to anyone who could outrace the OMS track co-owner, who was going for his fourth straight Modified feature (formerly the E-Mod division) win.
A Thursday night rules meeting has changed the designation of two classes of cars at OMS. The Economy Modifieds are now the Modifieds and they have a new look as well with open interiors. Modifieds are now Super Modifieds.
Womack was in a great position to take another checkered flag when he took the lead on lap 13 and quickly zipped to a four-car length lead over Julian and the rest of the field. But with three laps remaining, Julian got around Womack when they came together in turns three and four. Julian bumped Womack, causing the Haskell driver to momentarily lose command of his car.
That was all Julian needed to grab the lead. He rocketed across the finish line just inches ahead of Womack and pulled away from there to his second feature win of the year.
Womack used the high groove to come from the rear to the pack to first, going past Julian and the pack, on the backstretch on lap 13. On the next trip around the clay oval, Julian ran the low groove and pulled along side Womack in turn three, but could not nose ahead.
On lap 15, Womack made a tactical mistake, taking the low groove in an effort to hold Julian back. He did that for the next two laps until Julian got into Womack’s left rear quarter panel, causing the leader to momentarily slide sideways.
Julian had the lead at the flag stand. Womack went back to his high groove the final three laps but could not catch the victor.
“I just didn’t have a good feel for the track tonight,” Womack said. “I just couldn’t find a good place to run. I was loose in my heat race, but I didn’t make any changes before the feature. I should have.”
Muskogee’s Dennis Slader was third with Mike Northrup of Coweta fourth.
Meanwhile, Pure Stock driver James Gillean of Muskogee took the lead on lap two and never trailed from that point to capture the feature. He catapulted from the eighth starting position on the start to fourth on the first lap and then went ahead of the field as they crossed the start-finish line completing lap two.
Jerrold Mathison of Checotah led the opening lap from the outside pole position. He was way off the pace after lap one.
Brian Slader of Muskogee and Jason Ward of Tahlequah had a spirited fight for the runner-up spot. Ward would have the advantage on the back straight, but Slader had the better car in turns three and four and was able to beat his adversary at the checkered flag by just under four car lengths.
Jon Richardson of Muskogee was fourth with Robert LaRue of Oktaha was fifth.
When the red-hot Greg Skaggs faltered, the Frailey boys from Chouteau had the Super Modified main event pretty much to themselves.
Randy Frailey broke on top early with his relative Jaren right behind and the two ran 1-2 the rest of the way to set the pace in the feature. Randy had a three car-length lead over Jaren at the flag with Tahlequah’s Jason Teague as distant third. The rest of the pack was several car lengths behind Teague.
Skaggs went into the evening with four straight feature wins to his credit. The Bixby racer experienced car problems early and finished 19th in the 20-car field. He finished second in his heat.
In Hobby Stock, Brookin Stephens had everything just right on his race car to win his second straight feature and fourth of the season. He took the lead on lap 13 from Muskogee’s Randy Moses and then ran off from the field. Moses held the lead from lap four. Stephens, from Spiro, also took an easy win the his heat.
The race in the feature was for second place between Muskogee’s Dale Richardson and Moses. They battled bumper-to-bumper for the final five laps. Moses finally got the edge on the last turn of the last lap and just beat Richardson to the checkered flag.
Four caution flags slowed the pace of the race, but not Stephens.
Races return on Friday with the rescheduled appearances of NASCAR drivers Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader part of a full race card on Monday, July 14.
