Skaggs tops NASCAR duo

— OKTAHA — Kenny Wallace was impressed with Bixby’s Greg Skaggs.
“He looked like a NASCAR guy on dirt,” Wallace said after the 20-lap Super Modified feature race at Outlaw Motor Speedway Monday night.
Wallace ought to know as he was one of two NASCAR drivers, along with Ken Schrader, who raced against Skaggs and the track’s other Super Modified drivers.
Wallace was fifth and Schrader finished seventh among the 12 drivers who finished from the original 20-car field.
Skaggs has something to boast about, not only did he beat the NASCAR duo to the checkered flag but he also won the race by 12 seconds over runner-up Jason Hughes of Westville.
“We feel like we should have an advantage here. These are our cars and our track,” Skaggs said. “When we’re out there, they’re just another racer. I’m kind of low key, but I’ll be telling people where I work about this.”
Skaggs took the lead in the second lap and wasn’t challenged for the rest of the race.
“I started out close to the front and that always helps,” he said. “I’ve been running good here.”
Wallace may be telling people how much fun he had as he races in Illinois tonight.
“This was all about the fans and it shows that Outlaw Motor Speedway can be a high-end track,” he said.
Schrader was a little more subdued after the race.
“It was just another night at the races,” he said. “I didn’t run very good. The track was good.”
Wallace and Schrader started the race in seventh and ninth, respectively.
Good or bad, that didn’t make a difference to Brett Stanfill, a 6-year old fan from Braggs. He got his picture taken with Schrader.
“That was cool because I like NASCAR,” he said.
Earlier, Schrader finished first in the second of six heats and Wallace was second in the third heat.
A field of 134 cars in all of the classes competed Monday night, including 54 in Super Modified. Meanwhile, the checkered flag in the Hobby Stock feature went to Muskogee’s Dale Richardson.
Other feature winners were Clay Julian of Ozark, Ark., and Tahlequah’s Jason Ward in the Modified and in the Pure Stock.
