Ex-Hornet gets first coach job

By Kenton Brooks
Phoenix Sports Writer

Jeramy Branchcomb considers himself fortunate.

He’s going to start his career at a job in which he went college for and wanted to be — a high school football coach.

The 2003 Hilldale High School graduate will help coach Pryor High School’s offensive and defensive lines. He will also be the school’s assistant boys track coach.

“I sent out resumes to everybody — even Hilldale — within 30 miles of here,” the 24-year-old Branchcomb said. “I stuck it out for four years of college football to be a coach. I had offers from Porter and Pryor and chose Pryor.”

Of course, Branchcomb would’ve liked to work at his alma mater.

“They were my first choice,” he said. “They have a good program and coach (Don) Hendrix does a good job. But they didn’t really have openings in my field.”

Branchcomb, who just graduated from Northeastern State with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education, likes Pryor coach J.R. Winton.

“He reminds me a lot of coach Hendrix. He’s a stand-up guy who cares about kids,” Branchcomb said. “I’m going to learn a lot from him.”

When he’s not coaching, Branchcomb, who caught one pass for 25 yards in the 2006 season before breaking his collarbone in the third game, will teach kindergarten physical education.

“I’m really excited about that,” he said.

The first day of school at Pryor is Aug. 14.
