HHS senior gets new coach — again

For the past three years, Austin Ousley knew the only certainty was the uncertainty.
The senior-to-be is about to play for his third basketball coach in the last four years at Hilldale High School. Jeremy Rogers was hired back in mid-June.
“I heard he’s really a nice guy but that’s all I’ve heard,” Ousley said. “It’s hard to have a different coach every year. You just go out there and see where it gets you.
“I’m actually kind of glad we have a new coach. Last year was the only one I got to play and I got to play in a couple of games. I’m hoping this next year will be different.”
Rogers, a Northeastern State University graduate, comes to Hilldale from South Coffeyville and told the Phoenix after being approved as the new boys coach that he is “pretty demanding.”
Ousley, the younger brother of former Hilldale sprinter Jordan Ousley, had to get acclimated for Neil Hays and then two years later, Bryan Schlekeway. Schlekeway left the Hornets’ job after one season to take job at Stigler, closer to his home between Keota and McCurtain.
The Hornets return three starters from a team that finished 15-13 after a 3-20 record two years ago.
Austin didn’t play basketball his sophomore year.
“I wasn’t getting enough playing time so I decided I wasn’t going to play that year,” he said.
But the younger Ousley is taking his senior year seriously. He was at Hilldale’s speed and agility camp Monday morning and has been going through the series of drills with the other Hornets’ athletes. He said he’s going to play football in the fall.
“This helps your speed and it’s getting me in shape,” he said about the camp after pulling a sled, or a 25-pound weight on a flat plate.
When he’s not playing football and basketball, Austin Ousley will turn his attention to track where he runs in the 400-meter relay, 100 and 200 dashes and long jumps.
Ousley isn’t alone in adjusting a new coach at Hilldale. The girls also have a new coach as Laschelle Brown replaces Rodd Beer after Beer took the boys coaching job in Catoosa after leading the Lady Hornets for just one season.
Still, Ousley anticipates meeting his new basketball coach.
“It’s weird how coaches run things. They may have different ways of teaching things,” he said. “I’ll be learning about him and how he likes things done. It’ll be different — again. But it’s not something we’re not used to and we’ll see how it goes.”
