Prep roundup: 8-23
Softball RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY — Fort Gibson High School’s fastpitch softball team was more fortunate than others Saturday. They got to play.
Rain put a damper on the action for most of the area teams. Muskogee, now 5-4 for the season and Hilldale (6-1) had their games rained out at the Broken Arrow Tournament and the Saturday morning showers forced the cancellation of the Oktaha Tournament.
Coach Jerry Walker’s Lady Tigers, though, didn’t have any problems with the weather and won two games at the Collinsville East-West Classic by beating Chandler 4-3 and Oklahoma City Bishop McGuinness 7-0. The Lady Tigers are 12-2 for the season and have won four straight games.
In beating Chandler, Taylor Mills (2-2) struck out eight batters, while Brennan Miller had three doubles, while Jessica McClure doubled twice and drove in four runs and Hayley Jaynes had two hits.
In the win over McGuinness, McClure (5-0) picked up the pitching win. Mills had three hits, while Miller, Jaynes, McClure and Ashley Nevitt each had two hits.
In other action, the Sallisaw Central Tournament was postponed to Monday and will conclude at Warner’s diamond. Action starts at 2:30 p.m. with Keys facing Gore and Warner playing Okay at 3:45. The Keys-Gore winner meets Sallisaw Central at 5 p.m. and the Warner-Okay victor meeting Roland at 7:30.
The winners of the 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. games will clash at 8:45 p.m.
Volleyball MUSKOGEE TAKES SECOND — Muskogee broke into the win column for the first time this season and roared to a second place finish at the Glenpool Tournament this weekend. The Rougherettes are 4-5 for the season.
After beating Tulsa Rogers (25-11, 25-8), Oologah (25-7, 25-9), Glenpool (25-19, 25-20) and Collinsville (25-21, 25-22, 25-23), MHS lost to Shawnee (12-25, 25-22, 23-25 and 9-25) in the finals.
Galen Jernigan had 65 kills for the tourney. Chloe Ford had 61 kills and 16 blocks, while Raelee Perry had 75 digs. Sophomore Sarah Stotts had 121 assists, six blocks and seven service aces.
Muskogee plays at Jenks at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
