Published August 28, 2008 12:06 am - Big tackle, big dreams By Kenton Brooks Phoenix Sports Writer For Dominque Bacon, life’s good right now.
The 6-foot-6, 296-pound offensive tackle is ready for his senior season at Bacone College, in the best playing shape of his life and knows that his future holds plenty of promise. It wasn’t always that way for the St. Petersburg, Fla., native. Just four years ago, Bacon’s life was in turmoil. He had signed with Troy out of high school and had to sit out his first year because of academic ineligibility. Then, he got involved with selling drugs and was kicked out of school. “Being out of school that first time, I lost a lot of support,” he said. “I would try to pick myself back up and get back into school and go to another school, but I kept losing support.” Bacon eventually landed at Gulf Coast Community College in Mississippi and battled his way back. Then, there was the moment that changed Bacon’s life forever It was Sept. 24, 2005 — the birth of his son. “I realized it’s not about me,” he said. “I brought somebody into the world that I had to provide for. It’s still a struggle now. I’m in school and I’m dealing with his mom. To be honest with you, I love being a dad. I had him up here last semester. I took him to the mall to play on that little alligator.” About six months ago, he had another son. Bacon calls both of his sons daily. “I knew of my dad, but he wasn’t there. I want to be there for my kids,” he said. “I could’ve given up a long time ago, but it’s all about them. I’m not a quitter.” Now in his second and final year at Bacone, the hulking lineman has a chance to make the most of his senior season with an eye on the future. Scouts from the Green Bay Packers and Super Bowl champion New York Giants came to Muskogee last spring to give him a tryout and were impressed with his size, strength and speed. He has been clocked at 4.9 seconds in the 40-yard dash. The scouts were also happy to see him move from defensive end to offensive tackle.
