‘Sweet relief’ arrives for road-weary Warriors

By Kenton Brooks

Phoenix Sports Writer

Bacone College’s football team doesn’t have to travel as far this week as the Warriors seek to add to their win total in the early stages of this season.

Coach Joe Thrasher’s squad traveled more than 13 hours by bus last week to Madison, S.D., and opened the 2008 season with a 34-27 over Dakota State. Today, Bacone travels the 10 minutes to Indian Bowl to play the Louisiana College Wildcats in a 2 p.m. non-conference game.

“We were sluggish in the first half last week because we spent 13.5 hours on the bus,” Thrasher said. “We were able to shake that off and had a great second half.

“It’s going to be a very nice, sweet relief to play home after a long trip like that.”

The Wildcats, an NAIA school in Pineville, La., traveled by bus from Shreveport to Muskogee. As Hurricane Gustav moved across Louisiana, classes were canceled until Monday and the football team evacuated from the central part of the state to the city in the northwest corner. Shreveport is 323 miles from Muskogee.

Louisiana College, led by second-year head coach Dennis Dunn, opens the 2008 season with the Warriors. It will be the first meeting between the two teams.

The Wildcats are coming off a 5-5 season and Thrasher isn’t taking them lightly.

“We’ve got a battle on our hands,” he said. “Their quarterback (Derek Lewis) has been a backup there for three years and the receiver (Taylor Huffman, who had 76 catches for 928 yards and 5 touchdowns) is talented. They also have a running back (Detrick James) transferring in from TCU.

“We know the offense they run as it’s identical to what we run. It’s also the same system on defense. I feel good about the matchups and see what we can take advantage of (today).”

Bacone took advantage of a strong second half, rebounding from 140 yards of offense through the first two quarters and finished with 385 for the game.

Defensively, linebackers Reginal Toney, Bill Reddick and RaShaun Whitmire combined for 37 tackles and led by Toney’s 14 stops.

Today’s game is the first of four home games over the next five weeks. The Warriors play at Haskell Indian Nations University next Saturday before returning to Indian Bowl for a stretch of three straight home games.
