From staff reports

TULSA TAKES ON NORTH TEXAS — Last week Tulsa got off to a slow start against UAB before finally taking over in the second half for the 45-22 win.

Coach Todd Graham has to hope the Golden Hurricane will be more prepared this week against North Texas (kickoff at 6 p.m.).

“It’s another road game and we’re going back to Dallas,” he said. “I know they had a tough game against a very good Kansas State team (last week).”

North Texas, like Tulsa (1-0), runs a spread offense, though Graham prefers to compare their offense with Texas Tech, not the Hurricane.

“They’re different from us,” he said. “No tight ends. There’s very little one tight-end sets. They’re spread like what you see Texas Tech do.”

Ex-Hilldale defensive end Zack Wallace performed admirably in his Tulsa debut, picking up seven tackles last week against UAB.

“Coach (Keith) Patterson told me that he thought it was the best performance of any freshman linebacker that we’ve had here, which says something,” Graham said. “He thought it was an outstanding performance.”

Kickoff is at 6 p.m. on KRMG-AM 740.

BACONE LOOKS FOR TWO STRAIGHT — The Warriors look to start the season out 2-0 as they take on the NAIA Louisiana College Wildcats today at 2 p.m. at Indian Bowl.

Bacone (1-0) won its season-opener 34-27 over Dakota State last week. This will be the Wildcats’ (5-5 last year) first game of the year.

NSU TRAVELS TO TEXAS — After a rough road test to begin the year against Arkansas Tech, things don’t get easier for the RiverHawks (0-1) in week two. Tarleton State (1-0) finished 9-2 last season and is currently ranked No. 22 by d2football.com after defeating Southeastern Oklahoma 51-10 last week.

There is hope for NSU, though. Despite losing 22-3 a week ago, the RiverHawks held a high-powered Arkansas Tech team to just eight points through three quarters before the Wonderboys pulled away in the fourth. The game will be broadcast on KEOK-FM 102.1.
