Big day, big win for Hunter, Bryant

By Kenton Brooks
Phoenix Sports Writer

STILLWATER — Kendall Hunter and Dez Bryant gave new meaning to the Texas two-step.

The combination of Hunter’s running and Bryant’s receiving left the Houston Cougars gasping for their breaths at Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday.

The Cowboys’ duo are sophomores from East Texas, Hunter from Tyler and Bryant hailing from Lufkin.

Hunter ran for 210 yards on 22 carries and scored two touchdowns, while Bryant caught nine passes for 236 yards and three TDs. He also had a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown.

It becomes the first time in school history for the Cowboys to have a 200-yard rusher and 200-yard receiver in the same game as OSU dumped the Cougars 56-37.

“That’s a pretty good (option) for a quarterback,” OSU’s Zac Robinson said. “It always feels good when you throw a screen out there or see a guy run down the sidelines for 50-plus yards. It makes a lot easier on me.”

Bryant and Hunter made it very hard on the Houston defense.

“Dez and Kendall did a nice job,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. “Dez has continued to mature. He’s played more plays than he has ever before. He’s showed more consistency in what he’s doing. Kendall has been a good runner for us.”

Replacing Dantrell Savage as the No. 1 running back this season, Hunter made an impression quickly, rambling 58 yards for a touchdown on the Cowboys’ third play from scrimmage with 13:22 left in the first quarter to open the scoring.

Not to be outdone, Bryant caught a 39-yard TD pass in the first half, cutting OSU’s deficit to 16-14 with 1:23 left in the first half.

“I felt like we did a good job,” Bryant said. “We probably can’t do what we do without the team.”

Hunter was a little more quiet in his comments after the game.

“We really don’t worry about all that (statistics). We just worry about the win,” he said. “It wasn’t like Zac said you run it this time or told Dez to catch it. We were just going for the win.”

For all of the good feeling coming from the win, the Cowboys’ second to start the 2008 season, the dual performance overshadowed a struggling first half for OSU’s offense.

Robinson had tossed two interceptions and the Cowboys trailed, 16-14.
